Artist Profile

Jenny has spent her working life in secondary schools enjoying the delight of teaching art to young people. Although she was able to continue with her own practice during her career, in her 'retirement', she has re-engaged with energy and passion.

She works in pottery, paint and printmaking and enjoys the variety and freedom to choose her medium to fit her intention, inspiration and interests.

Ceramics

She uses stoneware in the main, with the occasional foray into procelain.  Mostly she works with thrown forms and is captivated by the friction between discipline, intuition and spontanaeity. She frequently uses matte glazes, which she associates with warm, worn stones. Her decoration is with oxides, stains and layered glazes, often with calligraphic and graphic patterns and marks as she investigates the tension between form and decoration. She is not a production potter; each piece is individual, although she often works in a series. Each piece has her potter's mark (JSK) and a stamp for the year followed by a number for the piece.

Painting and Drawing

Jenny uses a range of media - oil, acrylic, water colour and pen and ink. She loves a still life, frequently including her signature striped tea cloth, and enjoys the interaction and interpretation required for a portrait. She often uses text and has written, illustrated and bound children's books.

Printmaking

Here the theme of variety continues, with work in lino, silk-screen and collagraph. the latter is her favourite with its lively, textured qualities. She has recently completed a printed series called 'Palimpsest'  bringing together written, poetic fragments, prints and photographs.

Jenny has exhibited often, but most recently in Stroud and with Somerset Art Works (SAW). She also exhibits in local craft fairs. She has been commissioned by WHSmith, for illustration; most of her commissions are for private collectors. Contact her if you are interested in discussing a commission.
